Now that the weather is finally improving, it’s time to get some of those outdoor projects out of the way. We should also be thinking about ways we can reduce our environmental impact and save energy. Here are a few spring tips on how to lower utility costs:
- Spring cleaning: Look for ways to make your home more energy-efficient. Clean behind and underneath your refrigerator and dust light bulbs. Make sure windows are sealed properly when cleaning them.
- Check your air conditioner: Clean or replace the system’s filter and adjust thermostat settings for warmer weather. Have your system cleaned and inspected by a professional. Trim any plants or vines growing around the outdoor unit.
- Change direction: Reverse the direction of ceiling fans. They should be counterclockwise in the summer to create a downward airflow and make rooms cooler.
- Let it slide: Make sure the track on any sliding doors is clean. Dirt can damage the door seal and create gaps for cool air to escape through.
- Attic ventilation: Ventilation in attics draw cool air up through the house, cooling the space at a lower cost.
- Window treatments: If you are redecorating, consider installing insulated, thermal-backed drapes. They help block out the sun on south- and west-facing windows, keeping your home cooler on hot days.
- Plant some shade: Celebrate Arbor Day by planting a shade tree along the south- or west-facing side of your home. Trees help shade your home from the sun in the summer, reducing your energy bill. They are also good for the environment!
- Air dry laundry: Dry your laundry out in the sun, it saves energy and is gentler on your clothing.
- Shake a leg: Whenever possible, walk, ride your bike, or use public transportation instead of driving.
- Go green: Start a compost bin for recycling kitchen and yard waste. Install a rain barrel to conserve water for use in outdoor landscaping. Reduce, reuse and recycle whatever you can!
