Answering Your Home HVAC Questions

Why should I replace my existing heating or air conditioning system?

If your air conditioning or heating system is old, inefficient or in need of repair, you may consider replacing it. Today’s systems are more efficient than systems manufactured as little as ten years ago. If it is not properly maintained, wear and tear on your system can reduce its efficiency. Rather than enduring another costly season or replacing expensive parts, replacing your system may be the solution if you are concerned about utility bills.

What is involved in replacing an old system?

In addition to the equipment installation, technicians will inspect several items (such as ductwork, insulation, refrigerant piping, wiring, thermostat, etc.) and determine whether they need to be supplied or replaced.

How long can I expect a new system to last?

Industry averages suggest that an air conditioner should last 12 to 15 years, and a gas furnace should last as many as 20 to 25 years.

What preventative maintenance measures should I be aware of?

With proper upkeep, heating and cooling systems can keep you comfortable year-round. Heat pumps and oil-fired furnaces and boilers need a yearly professional tune-up. Gas-fired equipment burns a little cleaner and can be serviced every other year. Inspections will uncover leaks, soot, rust, rot, and other issues your system may have.

Next, the system should be run through a full heating cycle to ensure that it is fully functioning. Lastly, prevent soot buildup by cleaning the burner and heat exchanger.

How important is an air filter for my heating and cooling system?

The trapped air we breathe in our homes can be loaded with dust, pollen, plant spores and other pollutant particles – much of it is worse than the air outside.

Should ice form on my outside pipe when I run my air conditioner?

No – it is probably low on refrigerant or low on airflow. Replace your filter and allow the unit to thaw. Annual maintenance keeps your system in peak operation conditions.

Should I get my air ducts cleaned?

This can be beneficial in improving your indoor air quality by decreasing the spread of contaminates in your home.

If my HVAC system is new, does it need to be cleaned?

Yes! Even if it’s new, annual maintenance should be performed – this helps keep the warranty in effect. Most manufacturers state in the terms of their warranty that annual maintenance must be performed by a qualified professional. Keeping the system maintained will give you assurance that it is operating at peak efficiency.
