While your HVAC system works hard to keep your home at the most comfortable temperature, it can only do so much on its own. Proper, high quality insulation goes a long way in keeping the outside air out and the inside air in. Chances are you pay little to no attention to your insulation, but look out for these signs it needs to be replaced.
- Your energy bills have increased significantly. If the warmed or cooled air (depending on the season) inside your home escapes, or the air from outside is coming inside, your HVAC system will have to work longer and harder to maintain a consistent temperature. When this occurs, your bills will go up. If you notice a dramatic jump in energy prices, your insulation may need replacing.
- Constant change in indoor temperature. Insufficient or worn out insulation will result in erratic temperatures inside the home. If you are going from hot to cold back to hot again, you may need new insulation.
- Pests. Pests often live and breed in attic and/or basement insulation. An infestation is a good sign of needing an insulation inspection.
- Water damage. Insulation helps regulate temperatures, but also protects areas of your home that are susceptible to water leaks. When insulation is lacking, water can get through walls or the roof and into the home. The presence of mold and other water damage is a sure sign to replace the insulation.
