If you haven’t already, chances are you will be switching your thermostat from “cool” to “heat” pretty soon. When that time comes, you want to make sure it works and keeps you warm and comfortable! Look out for these warning signs that your furnace may be on the path to failure:
Age: The average life expectancy for a furnace is between 16 and 20 years. If yours is around this age or older, start looking for a replacement. You may not be motivated to look, but better to do it now than in an emergency when your current furnace has completely stopped working.
Increase in gas/electric bills: As your furnace ages, it will lose its efficiency, especially if it has not been well-maintained. It will have to work harder and run longer to give off enough heat. If you notice a rise in bills from month-to-month, you may be in the market for a new unit.
More repairs in the last couple years: Furnaces generally incur the most breakdowns in the last two years of their lives. When you need frequent repairs in a relatively small span of time, it may be more worth your time and money to replace it.
Frequent trips to the thermostat: Are you constantly changing the temperature on your thermostat? Does the temperature feel significantly different from room to room in your home? This is a sign that your furnace is no longer able to effectively heat your home and distribute air.
Your home is dry and dusty: Older furnaces begin to lose their ability to moisturize and clean the air in the home. If you notice more dust in the home, or you have a dry throat or skin, it may be time to upgrade.
