Reducing Allergens in Your Home

Published by Steven Weiland

Allergens in your home can cause a number of health issues such as congestion, a runny nose, and sneezing. Prescribed medications help these issues, however it is best to eliminate the allergens before health issues arise and so you can avoid their reoccurrence in the future. It makes sense to do everything possible to reduce or eliminate floating allergens altogether, especially if you or other family members have sensitivity to them.

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 25 percent of all Americans are estimated to suffer from a number of respiratory conditions including allergies and asthma. It is important to identify what exactly you are allergic to and get information from a medical professional on how to manage it. This will be helpful in reducing the number of allergens entering your home.

Keep doors and windows shut as often as possible to keep allergens out. In the summer, it is nice to have windows open to air out your home once in a while, but the downside is that you allow a lot of allergens to get inside. Mold and pollen spores can easily travel through screened doors and windows so keep them closed as often as you can.

Controlling humidity levels within your home helps to keep mold growth to a minimum – mold growth runs rampant and is difficult to control in more humid climates. Try to maintain a humidity level within your home at 50% or below. Clean basements, bathrooms and kitchens regularly since they are the rooms where high humidity levels are common.

If your budget allows, installing a whole house air filtration system in your home to trap allergens and keep them from affecting those living in your home who are more sensitive to them. A less expensive fix is remembering to replace the air filters of your HVAC system monthly. This helps the allergen issue as well as makes your A/C and heating more cost-effective and efficient.
