In the Midwest, we are familiar with the uncomfortably cold temperatures that fall and winter bring. That doesn’t mean we have to live uncomfortably when inside our homes. Follow these five tips to make sure you stay warm and comfortable in the upcoming cold season.
Seal Potential Heat Leaks
Heat inside your home is precious in the winter, but it can escape through even the smallest crack. In order to prevent heat leaks, caulk your windows and place weather stripping around doors that lead outside. Your attic should have quality insulation, since it is the most common place to lose heat. Keep the damper closed on your fireplace when you are not using it.
If you have a furnace, make sure it is working at its highest potential. Change the filter before the cold weather hits, and change it once a month throughout the season. When filters are clogged, the heater will not work as efficiently, and the air quality will be decreased.
Install a Digital Thermostat
If you are still working with a manual thermostat, you won’t have precise control of the temperature inside your home. Digital models give a more accurate temperature to ensure maximum comfort. Yet another step up is a programmable thermostat that can turn the heat on for you before you wake up, so you won’t have to get out of bed in uncomfortably cool temperatures.
Take Advantage of the Sun
Cold winter days can also be clear and sunny, when no clouds trap the warmth. Take advantage of the sunshine – open your blinds and curtains to get more radiant heat. However, don’t forget to close them once the sun goes down!
Schedule Preventive Maintenance
Nothing could be worse than your heating system malfunctioning in the middle of a frigid winter. Having regular professional check-ups and tune-ups will ensure that your system will work properly and that you will have a cozy winter!
