Four HVAC Tips For The Spring Thaw

Published by Steven Weiland

Prepare your HVAC unit for Spring

Within the last week, temperatures have slowly begun to rise between the upper 40s and low 50s around the Chicagoland area. After enduring a particularly cold and snowy winter, homeowners might be starting to plan their Spring cleaning activities in order to prepare for the warmer months ahead.

It might be too soon to turn on your air conditioning system, but there is still plenty for Chicagoans to do to properly prepare their HVAC unit for Spring. Our experts at Heatmasters have gathered just a few tips to consider implementing as we prepare for the Spring thaw:

  • Clear Up Your Supply Vents, Grills and Registers – It’s not uncommon for more dust, pet hair and dirt to gather around your home’s vents during the colder weather months. You’ve been cooped up inside trying to keep warm, which increases the chance for allergens to collect. By clearing these areas of allergens, not only will your system run more smoothly this Spring, but family members that suffer from seasonal allergies will be able to breathe a little easier.
  • Switch Out Your Air Filter – A heavy presence of dust, dirt and debris around your furnace can also indicate that it’s time to replace your air filters. Depending on what your heating and cooling system’s settings are, your air filters should ideally be replaced every 3 to 6 months.
  • Adjust Your Humidifier Settings – Despite the onslaught of snow we experienced throughout January and February, colder temperatures make the air extremely dry around the Chicagoland area. As temperatures rise, so will the humidity outside of your home. Check the weather for the upcoming weeks and make sure to adjust the humidity levels in your home accordingly. This will ensure your home stays comfortable, and once again, acts as a safe haven for any allergy sufferers in your household.
  • Move Debris Off And Away From Your HVAC Unit – Because your outdoor unit is usually placed on the side of your home, it might also be a convenient place to pile snow or outdoor furniture during the Winter. In preparation for routine maintenance, it’s a good idea to clear off the top and sides of your HVAC unit. That way, it can be easily accessed by an HVAC technician during maintenance service or repairs this Spring.
