How Does A Tankless Water Heater Work?

Published by Steven Weiland

What exactly is a tankless water heater and how do they work? Let’s start with the what, and then move on to the how. A tankless water heater is a type of water heater that saves space, saves energy, and provides an endless supply of hot water. As the name suggests, these water heaters eliminate the need for a storage tank. Tankless heaters are growing in popularity for these reasons and many more. Their innovative and compact design make them perfect for nearly any home.

Tankless water heaters use the same concept to heat water as their traditional counterparts, just without the need to hold water in a large storage tank. Basically, the heater only heats up water when it’s needed, meaning you save on your energy bill because you won’t be using energy to heat up water you’re not using.

Basically, when the hot water tap on your sink or shower is turned on, the pipes draw cold water up through the water heater. A water-flow sensor then activates a gas burner which, in turn, warms a heat exchanger. The cold water that entered leaves the water heater at the desired temperature. Gases from combustion exit through a sealed ventilation system.

Not only do tankless water heaters save you on your energy bill—they save a TON of space. Without the addition of a giant water tank to store & maintain water before it reaches your faucet, tankless water heaters open up square footage that can be used for storage or other appliances. Some tankless water heaters can be mounted on the wall to save even more space.

Tankless water heaters are some of the most affordable energy-efficient home appliances on the market today. Whether you’re looking to save some dollars or save the environment, installing a tankless water heater might be the answer you’re looking for!
